When Companies Merge, Do Resumes Fall Through the Cracks

At the point when Companies Merge, Do Resumes Fall Through the Cracks At the point when Companies Merge, Do Resumes Fall Through the Cracks In a time of union, recruiting programming examines each candidate's resume. Simply ensure you remain at the head of the pile. What happens to your resume when you apply to an organization that at that point experiences a merger or acquisition?Let's state you went after a position at Merrill Lynch toward the beginning of September 2008. By mid-September, Bank of America was in cutting edge converses with purchase Merrill Lynch. Would your resume be shipped to Bank of America's ATS (candidate following framework) programming once the deal was final?Do organizations in such conditions consolidate their ATS databases, or do the two players hold self-ruling frameworks? Would it be a good idea for you to reapply to Bank of America, and assuming this is the case, when? What's more, how?To unwind the riddle of what befalls your resume under these conditions, Ladders talked with Matt Sigelman, CEO of Burning Glass, in Boston, which produces continue preparing and information extraction advanc ements utilized by HR divisions and selection representatives to sort applicants. (To see how ATS innovation screens and sorts applicants, if it's not too much trouble read Resume, Meet Technology: Making Your Resume Format Machine-Friendly.)Sigelman and Burning Glass have helped various customer organizations consolidate ATS programming in the wake of a merger or acquisition. An inconvenient systemThere are better choices for blending information frameworks than was at one time the case, Sigelman said. As of late as a couple of years prior, solid ERP (endeavor resourcing arranging) frameworks held an organization's information store, including any resumes it had gained. In the days when ERP was the best, the agreement would have been that two blending organizations would need to be on one mutual framework, with all information in one spot. That is the place ERP frameworks ended up getting so famous: this hypothesis that you need all information in one spot, Sigelman said. The result was ordinarily an all around requested framework in which all gatherings worked under similar procedures and systems. The tradeoff was clumsy information stockpiling foundation that was hard to keep up and experienced difficulty moving resumes and other information between the different parts.I think a great deal of organizations ended up exchanging request for effectiveness, Sigelman said. You put $20 million of every an ERP execution, and you get a mess of sorrow toward the finish of the day.Separate however equivalent dataWhat changed the game? The appearance of XML (Extensible Markup Language), an information markup language that guides data frameworks in sharing orga nized information. Today, XML joins programming code to reports and records to make the exchange of information easier.Instead of two frameworks converging into one with similar procedures and techniques, organizations experiencing mergers would now be able to choose the most proficient strategy â€" to keep up independent ATS programming and still offer resumes in a typical candidate pool.Candidates can be considered for positions in different organization units without the need to consolidate ATS programming and without the need to normalize information originating from unique ATS databases. Will my resume be lost in the shuffle?Your continue is protected, Sigelman said. Based on what he's seen, most organizations are cautious with their information stores. The cutting edge is to utilize such information, to perceive that such information speaks to a genuine advantage for an organization, regardless of whether it's present place of employment candidates or the resumes an organization has gotten before, he said.In short, work searchers likely needn't stress over reapplying to an acquirer while pursuing a vocation at the procuring organization. At long last, it doesn't damage to send your resume once more, Sigelman said. The ATS will make the selection representative aware of the presence of earlier forms. Simply be cautious they don't repudiate one another.

Phils Mailbag

PHIL’S MAILBAG As an editor at Wizards of the Coast I get all sorts of fascinating mail. I’ve gotten letters from convicts that might curl your hair. One guy serving what should have been a significant felony sentence in Texas offered to write a book for us however warned me that he couldn’t write it quick as a result of it was so noisy in prison, but that he would put a lot of time into itâ€"he had nine years. Wildly inappropriate (no less than for a publisher of fantasy fiction) book proposals are an almost every day prevalenceâ€"like some man’s memoir of his days as a minor league baseball player and numerous works of “vampire erotica.” I as soon as obtained a fan letter for my computer game novelization Baldur’s Gate from a kid who must have been seven or eight years old, hand written in pencil, which informed me I wrote good monster fights, however that the book should have had more monster fights. Well, there’s no pleasing the monster fight fans. But sometimes I get letters from perfectly regular, coherent individuals with completely reasonable and acceptable requests. Unfortunately these are a little bit of a rarity, however maybe because they’re so uncommon I get a chance to put aside my busy schedule and reply. Just yesterday I acquired a letter from an eighth-grade girl in California. She plays the Dungeons & Dragons sport with her household, and identified me as somebody she should interview for a faculty project on the subject. Maybe it’s because she’s the identical age now that I was once I first encountered the Dungeons & Dragons experience, possibly she simply randomly occurred to catch me on a good day, however I sat down and answered her eight completely cheap questions. Then I thought, heck, why not share that with everybody. This was my response to her . . . I obtained your letter and request for answers to some questions. It’s great to see a family on the market enjoying D&D together, and I’m happy to assist assist that in any way I can! Here are my solutions to your questions . . . 1. How did you first study D&D, and was there anybody who influenced you to play? I first realized about D&D once I was the same age as youâ€"I was in eighth grade and my friend Bob bought a duplicate of the old basic set. This was the summer of 1979, truly between eighth grade and my freshman 12 months of high school. The first time we performed it, I rolled a character, just utilizing 3d6 in order, and ended up with my highest score in Intelligence. Since we didn’t know anyone who had already played it we just adopted what the principles advised so I ended up as a magic-person (what we now call a wizard). It took us a while to figure out the way to learn the 4-sided die, however as soon as we did it turned out I had only one hit level. Not certain exactly what this meant, I headed off into the dungeonâ€"yup, just me, all by myself, a 1 hp magic-user with no armor and one spell. I encountered a skeleton. We rolled initiative and the skeleton gained. It hit me, and I died. From that example I was satisfied that D&D was the worst recreation ever, and we didn’t play again till we started highschool a pair months later and met a few new associates who had been taking part in it for some time, and with somewhat more thought put into it. They rapidly set us straight and I haven’t stopped enjoying since then! 2. Was there any memorable journey your character went on? Way too many in the last 30 years to count, actually! I was just talking with a co-worker right here, although, about a time years in the past when my associates and I were nonetheless enjoying the primary version Advanced Dungeons & Dragons guidelines, and taking part in by way of the unique Giant sequence. We were nicely into Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, going through off against a gaggle of frost giants who stood on the other side of a deep crevasse, throwing boulders at us. My dwarf fighter, Borgazdin Broadhammer, threw his dwarven t hrower warhammer, and thanks to the DM’s residence-brewed important hit system, I managed to give you 140 factors of damage on that one throw, singlehandedly destroying the frost giant with one hit. That was fairly cool. 3. Do you prefer to be the Dungeon Master or only a character? I’ve always been drawn to the roll of Dungeon Master, however I play, too, and have most likely been a participant as often as I’ve been a DM through the years. I’ve all the time been a writer/storyteller at coronary heart and so the roll of DM has a robust attraction to me. Also, the DM gets to maintain playing regardless of who’s turn it's! four. Do you play often scheduled video games? I do. Every Monday afternoon I run my own campaign, set in the Forgotten Realms world. The characters just turned seventh stage and are going through off towards undead within the wastelands of Thay. On Wednesdays I play in a special ongoing game during our lunch hour the place we’ve been slowing working our method through Keep on the Shadowfell. 5. What race and character class are you and why? In the Wednesday lunch game I’m a human cleric of the Raven Queen, largely as a result of my beloved gnome illusionist was killed and the party really wanted a cleric. I’ve always had a soft spot for gnome illusionists and have performed at least five of them over time, but all of them have met tragic, early deaths, often by the hands of fellow players. What does that say about me? 6. Do you paint miniatures, create dungeons, and even get into character with costumes or life-sized weapons? I actually have painted loads of miniatures through the years, but need to say that the brand new pre-painted plastic miniatures are easier, sooner, cheaper, and don’t require a lot time and effort! Though my own marketing campaign is ready in the Forgotten Realms world, I’m creating all the adventures for itâ€"I love creating my very own adventures, maps, and even monsters. But I’ve by no means wor n costumes or carried out any type of stay motion roleplaying. I are inclined to get slightly shy, and don’t have a lot of an performing streak! 7. At college, or ever, had been you ever teased for taking part in D&D? I was teased in school for all types of causes, however I don’t bear in mind D&D being a kind of. I’m sufficiently old, and began enjoying early enough, that once I was in highschool most individuals nonetheless didn’t know what D&D was so there really wasn’t a stigma surrounding it yet. No one who was inclined to tease us really had any thought we have been taking part in D&D or that it could be one thing to tease somebody about. Now that celebrities like Stephen Colbert, Vin Diesel, Mike Myers, and the bands Barenaked Ladies and My Chemical Romance, have all “come out” as D&D gamers, I’d be shocked if anyone is teasing folks for enjoying D&D anymore. If they're, there are some names you'll be able to throw again at them! eight. Do you plan to play D&D for some time to come? You bet I do! I’ve been taking part in D&D for arising on 31 years now, and I can’t imagine why I’d stop. I’m having just as much enjoyable playing D&Dâ€"twice every week!â€"now as I ever have. So, I say: D&D forever! Hopefully you’ll feel the same way in 2040. â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans This is awesome! I am really glad you probably did this for her! Congrats to the girl and her family too! That have to be lots of enjoyable! Fill in your particulars beneath or click an icon to log in:

Interest for recently recruited employees with specialized aptitudes, as inward examining mastery, spending determining, and SEC/money related detailing consistence, is just developing, making a flexibly request befuddle. Hesitant to settle on prerequisites and resolved to locate that one flawless worker, employing administrators are at a stalemate. I suggest an admission call with your scout to examine your recruiting needs in full. This incorporates assessing your organization's present market position, developing dangers and openings, and development objectives throughout the following two to five years. At the point when I comprehend where your organization is going, I can convey a convincing story to qualified up-and-comers. I pitch them on the vacant situation as well as the chance to have a significant effect on an organization's future, an energizing possibility that can arouse an up-and-comer's curiosity and help your business stick out. Organize. In the event that you list ten basic necessities and I discover an up-and-comer with eight out of the ten, this applicant could in any case be a victor expecting all the prerequisites are of equivalent significance. Obviously, if the two missing necessities were likewise your two major issues, I'd know quickly that the competitor was wrong. Attempt as we would, enrollment specialists can't understand minds. Be clear about major issues in advance so we can organize as needs be during our hunt. Be open. As you organize your favored aptitudes, consider which of these abilities can be educated through hands on understanding. With low joblessness, remain reasonable about what's conceivable in the current market. You may not discover an up-and-comer who marks each crate, yet on the off chance that the up-and-comer is anxious to learn and steps up to the plate, some additional preparation forthright may deliver profits for a considerable length of time to come. Submit. I get it: with the expense of a terrible recruit besting $240,000, nobody needs to make an inappropriate call. Be that as it may, in the event that you invest all your energy discussing which possibility to employ, your top decisions will proceed onward to different chances. Keep in mind, applicants are handling various offers. In the event that you meet an ideal recruit, be set up to make a serious proposal as quickly as time permits. Your selection representative can work in the background to comprehend a competitor's compensation desires and guarantee the offer you make is one they're eager to acknowledge. Finding your Waldo in a tight ability showcase is conceivable yet get your work done progress of time. At the point when all partners adjust to the equivalent employing prerequisites and timetable, your enrollment specialist can move rapidly to distinguish ability and advancement the recruiting stalemate. How to Be Likeable When Youre the New Girl at Work

Instructions to Be Likable When You're the New Girl at Work I love beginning a new position in another organization and new condition, where I dont know anybody! said nobody ever. Beginning a new position is most likely the grown-up form of beginning school as the tenderfoot. Youre attempting to make sense of the normal practices, where individuals have lunch, the acknowledged degree of associating at work, who your wbb (work closest companions) potential up-and-comers are, etc. Youre attempting to get familiar with the ropes, however youre additionally being aware of not resembling a dolt. Its nerve-wracking, to state the least. Some of us figured out how to abstain from being the tenderfoot in our early stages. Be that as it may, as grown-ups who work in the corporate world, in the long run, we as a whole need to startfresh some place and be the beginner in the group. Trust me, as somebody who emigrated to this nation as a 15-year-old secondary school sophomore andstarted three new openings in recent years, I know the inclination very well. In the profoundly matrixed present day work environment, however, there are rules of thumbyou need to follownot just make an effective onboarding encounter yet in addition become popular with your partners in the process.Based on my own encounters beginning various new openings, the exploration in Positive Psychology, the standards educated in Designing Your Life, and a ton of dynamic sympathy, here are demonstrated techniques for how to be agreeable when you are the new young lady at work. Ive separated the proposal into three levels. The simple level methods everybody and anybody ought to have the option to quickly incorporate the counsel. These proposals are going to sound natural if youve read Dale Carnegies How to Win Friends and Influence People. What's more, really his standards have generally gotten equal with sound judgment. At that point, we move into the moderate and the troublesome classifications that may take additional time, intel, and assets so as to consummate. At l ong last, I end with the most significant and presumably the most troublesome task.Easy:Smile more.Smiling is experimentally demonstrated to cause you to feel more joyful and increasingly positive. Its likewise a type of social greeting. Its presumably perhaps the most effortless thing you can do to expand your likeability.Turn your face and body toward the individual with whom youre speaking.Your non-verbal communication straightforwardly shows your eagerness and availability to be open and responsive to your new condition. Try not to clutch a mobile phone or the console when you talk.Dont keep away from eye to eye connection when strolling down the hall.Look individuals in the eye when you pass by them, and grin respectfully. Draw in with individuals, in any event, for that concise second, with a truly inspirational mentality. Science says this is the way you become more memorable.Shake people groups hands like you mean it.This doesnt fundamentally imply that you have to utilize a bad habit hold, only that you connect with you warmly greet th quality and purposeand dont let go too early.Find a reason to get doughnuts or sweets.Dont just haphazardly do it without an event, thought, since that may put on a show of being edgy. Its far and away superior if its a gathering thing when everybody brings a bit of something. In any case, put some idea into what you bring. On the off chance that you go to Vons the morning of and got the primary thing you found in the bread kitchen segment or the least expensive box of desserts, it shows.Make your inclinations visible. Are you into specific games, film, books, side interests? Somebody in the workplace may share your inclinations. Post something identified with that enthusiasm for your work area or office, since this may provoke a bystander to comment.Dont gossip. This isnt only another young lady rule; its progressively like a whole vocation rule. Be that as it may, its particularly harming if youre new.Moderate:Remember people groups names. No, I mean REALLY attempt to recall their names. On the off chance that the primary thing you state in a self-presentation is that you are terrible at recollecting names, you are making a cop-out for yourself. In all actuality, youll most likely recall your CEOs nameand in the event that you dont, youll apologize plentifully. Indeed, we invest more energy to recollect people groups names when we have to. You ought to consistently focus on it to remembereveryonesnames, however. It will go a long way.Pay thoughtfulness regarding people groups interests.Topics like games, motion pictures, pets, and children will generally get individuals talking. In the event that you ask, theyll get the chance to discuss themselvesand individuals love discussing themselves. Its demonstrated by science.Listen more than you talk.Sometimes trying to show that we can identify with somebody else,we broadly expound on our own encounters and make the discussion about ourselves. At the poin t when we do this, were holding hostage our crowd. I consider it a discussion robber. Rather, tune in to what the other individual is stating before ringing in.Be inquisitive, and pose inquiries about people groups lives, both expertly and personally.Imagine you needed to compose a report on this individual. What makesher extraordinary and exceptional? For what reason does she do what does? What are her convictions and why? What does she like to read?Say yes to solicitations to events. You brought lunch, yet colleagues welcomed you to go to lunch together. State yes. You can have your boxed lunch for supper or lunch the following day. Individuals like to be companions with agreeable individuals. Whatever reason you have, dont turn down those early solicitations. Theyre likely going to prompt more solicitations later on in the event that you play your cards right.Dont reference your old employment too much.Unless you truly need to come to a meaningful conclusion or give challenge, att empt to maintain a strategic distance from continually remarking on how things were done at my last company. The over the top referencing of where you originated from radiates the feeling that you are not so much presentor prepared to adjust to your new company.Difficult:Pay consideration regarding the organization culture, and drink the Kool-Aid.This is troublesome in light of the fact that it requires time venture and elevated mindfulness. You must have been with the organization for in any event a month or two to fire getting on what the acknowledged standards are. Yet, when you do, buy into on the temporary fad. Are individuals truly into wellness here? Get a Fitbit. Are individuals for the most part workinguntil 6:00 pm and past? Dont be the first to leave. Are the town corridor gatherings at this organization an implicit prerequisite? Dont be a savvy ass and remain at your work area. Discover the principles of the game and play the game.Over-deliver.This is basic: When you are new, individuals are bound to assume the best about you, and their desires for your presentation are not founded on what theyve seen you do yet. The entirety of this is to state that individuals pretty much are as yet standing by to frame their judgment on your exhibition, so this is the least demanding opportunity to surpass desires by over-delivering.Lend some assistance in someones time of need. With the exemption of a couple of sorts of positions, the vast majority in workplaces will be surrendered an incline period called the onboarding procedure. This by and large methods you have additional time than you have activities. What's more, this is an ideal opportunity to be key in discovering individuals you can help. By being key, I dont imply that you should enable the cleaning to group clear the floor or help the secretary monitor the CEOs plan. Recognize individuals who hold works that are like your own or are obligations youd like to perform.Ask another person out for an espres so break. This is something that I put in the troublesome container basically on the grounds that planning is everything. On the off chance that you dont discover somebody that you cilick with, this undertaking is essentially inconceivable. Real association or expectation to interface is the main way that this sort of connection will be productive and make you an increasingly affable individual at work. Maybe this is a greater amount of errand to measure your agreeability than one to perform on the off chance that you know youre as of now there.Be present and visible. In the starting stages, individuals are searching for pieces of information to help them intellectually suss you out and scope out what your identity is and what youre about. Bepresent and careful aboutproviding intimations to assist them with framing their psychological picture of you.Beware of in-office clubs, and dont feel awful if youre not included.By factions, Im alluding to individuals that are loath to inviting n ew individuals. Along these lines, this doesnt incorporate that gathering of truly affectionate workers of the organization who are glad to have you join as the new individual from their gathering. The selective and cliquey bunches are commonly contained individuals who are unreliable and uninformed, who need the insurance and affirmation of a gathering that is theirs and theirs alone. You dont need to connect with individuals like that.Be patient. This maybe is the most troublesome assignment on this whole rundown. People are social creatures. The discernment that you are detached or even distanced from your friends is one that pummels the mind for the vast majority. In any case, actually evident fellowship sets aside some effort to create. Furthermore, regardless of whether youre the most agreeable individual on earth, it will take individuals effort to take note. 5 Ways to Annoy a Recruiter ePropelr

5 Ways to Annoy a Recruiter ePropelr 5 Ways to Annoy a Recruiter You’ve probably come across people who really have it together...great attention to detail, strong analytical skills, excellent problem solver, great follow through, etc. (Group A). And then we all have that friend who doesn’t return phone calls or text messages, emails you in shorthand, and is just plain lazy (Group B). Recruiters notice these traits in candidates just like you do with your friends and we love candidates from Group A. When we come across a Group B person we want to run for the hills screaming. Which group do you fall into? Here are some tips to help you navigate through the hiring process and avoid being put on the “Do Not Call” list. #5 A lack of communication skills and poor follow through on commitments Many companies use online assessments, digital interviews, and writing tests to screen applicants. It’s expected that you’ll complete these tasks in a timely manner. Even if there’s no specific “due date,” you should plan to touch base with your recruiter within 24 hours. If you know you won’t be able to take an assessment for a few of days, let them know. Poor communication during the pre-hire phase shows unreliability and disinterest in the role. This is a quick way to get eliminated. #4 Mass applying to jobs without looking at the detailsKnow what job you’re applying to and remember that recruiters are busy. On average, a Recruiter can manage a workload of up to 100 openings if they have similar requirements. Time is of the essence. The mantra “Work Smarter, Not Harder” always applies to a good Recruiter. If you’re mass applying to random jobs, that’s not a smart approach to take. For ex ample, if you apply to a Vice President of Sales position and you just graduated from college a month ago, that’s going to irritate any recruiter. Pay attention to details. #3 Falling out of touch and then miraculously resurfacing This happens ALL the time! If you are actively seeking work, your communication skills should be top notch and you should notify your recruiter of other appointments, interviews, vacations, or other pockets of time when you’re not available. A good recruiter will ask you this up front; however, if they don’t, please take the time to inform them of your schedule. It will make you seem involved and interested! And if you’ve changed your mind about the opportunity, that’s okay! Just tell your Recruiter. They’ll be more likely to work with you again if you communicate your change of heart instead of just falling off the face of the universe and then resurfacing a week later with an excuse. #2 Accepting an offer, only to reject it days later Before you accept a job offer, make sure you’re serious about it. Changing your mind after you’ve already accepted is a fast way to get on the “Do Not Call” list. This happens a lot with passive candidates who are “testing the waters” to see if there is anything better out there. When you change your mind about an offer you immediately lose credibility with your recruiter. You’ll also lose credibility with your current employer too. Statistics confirm that over 80% of people who accept a counteroffer from their current employer are no longer employed at that company in 12 months (National Employment Association). Recruiters work really hard to sell you to the Hiring Manager, get your interview lined up and negotiate your job offer. When you accept an offer, your Recruiter does a happy dance and when you turn around and reject it, they’re in the corner rocking back and forth. #1 Not putting contact information on your resumeThis happens a lot more than you’d think. How can someone contact you if there isn’t a phone number or email address on your resume? It’s even worse when the number listed on your resume is wrong or is no longer in service (insert Homer Simpson’s “DOH” here). This shows a lack of attention to detail and sloppiness. Please don’t do this. When you begin the job search process, take a hard look in the mirror and know what areas are challenging for youâ€"then make a conscious effort to work on them. The most important thing to remember is that a recruiter or hiring manger should enjoy working with you. If you make the hiring process time consuming, challenging, and frustratingâ€"they’re going to think that’s what working with you will be like. Be the person who is flexible, reliable, and quick to respond. Then, even if you don’t get that particular job the recruiter will remember you for the next opportunity and say, “I know the perfect person for the job.”

The Gradlife - How to turn a loss into a win

The Gradlife - How to turn a loss into a win by Lydia Randall How do you turn a loss into a win? My own personal perspective is that ‘winning is the result of countless losses’.Personal experiences, testimonials from family and friends, and anyone else with a story, have all taught me that winning never feels as good unless you’ve experienced losing.Let’s face it, at some point in life we’ve all been told the words ‘don’t give up’. You’ve probably even said it yourself. But regardless of when it was said, we can all recall the moment we finally pushed through it. Suddenly everything you’ve endured  becomes worth it, and despite the challenges that arose, the countless knock-backs you endeavoured and the ‘L’s you took along the way, you can finally say you won you made it.By appreciating a loss you learn to value a win. And if you can learn to place as much focus on that, then losing can actually end up resulting in something positive. Here are just a few losing scenarios you might find yourselves in, as well as my top tips to help you turn things around.1. Not getting the grades you wantedAh, the dreaded results day. Like a real-life version of Eminems ‘Lose Yourself’ â€" ‘palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. He’s nervous but on the surface, he looks calm and ready.’Okay, so I’m excluding the bit about vomiting from your mum’s spaghetti (I’m sure your mum’s spaghetti is lovely). However, what he’s describing is a genuine anxiousness that at some point we all go through, especially when it’s quite literally concerning a life changing moment, and you feel as though it’s one that could either make or break you.But you don’t have to let one result define you and dictate your future. Even if you’re disappointed with how your results have gone, it doesn’t have to be the be-all-and-end-all. You can turn it into something positive â€" and here’s how.Go to Plan B. In other words, prepare for your results just like you did for your exams, and c reate a contingency plan which outlines what your next steps might be if XYZ were to happen. You do this by asking yourself some key questions such as:By not having the results I need what will be the outcome? Is this the only route to get to where I want to go?What are some alternative options available to me?Out of these options, which one would suit me best? The key to having a Plan B is by knowing that there will always be one. Though it may not be your first choice, there’s always another route. And if at first you dont succeed dont ever stop trying. And, who knows? Plan B could end up being even better than Plan A.Some of the world’s most successful people haven’t always had the best results â€" and many more have taken unconventional ways to get to the top. And I can bet you that none of them gave up trying because of a bad grade. How to deal with exam stress2. Not getting into your chosen UniversityGetting into university is never an easy task. You have to decide where you want to go; whether to live at home or away; the course you want to study; what grades you need to get. The list is practically endless. So, what do you do when your chosen university turns you down?First of all: don’t panic. Evaluate your situation, and consider your options. If you’re still set on the university life, you may still have a chance to go. Clearing provides some fantastic courses at top universities that you may not have even seen.Quite often students have a very negative perception of clearing. To clarify: clearing is simply a pool of universities and colleges that still have availability left on their courses. This means you could find your course available at a different uni, or find an entirely different course that you might actually prefer. There are plenty of accounts of people going through clearing, who either ended up in a better university, or took a completely different course and absolutely loved it.And some of those who went straight to work are now ear ning more than they would have expected with their degree, or may even have had vocational courses paid for by their employers.I wouldnt consider any of those outcomes to be a loss.Clearing: How does it work? How to: Prepare for you first year of uni3. Not Getting the JobLet’s say you applied for 10 jobs. For every one of those, 100 other jobseekers also apply. This means your CV could be up against 1,000 others â€" and that level of competition isn’t always easy.In a competitive job market, managing your expectations is paramount. Even with a great application, you wont always get the job. But it’s all about making yourself stand out. That means aside from meeting all the necessary requirements, you have to properly sell your strengths and adapt your application to meet the job spec. And putting in the extra time is what will pay dividends in the long run.If you’re still not successful? Don’t take it personally. Just look at yourself as being one step closer to the right ro le.Remember, your career isn’t about finding ‘A’ job â€" it’s about finding ‘THE’ job.Do. Not. Settle.Try accentuating the positives, and looking at not getting that job as a good thing. Why? Because it will give you time to enhance more of your skills or even acquire some new ones. You never know, you could end up getting more experience elsewhere and then moving into an even better job.So, how can you turn a loss into a win?Prepare for both outcomes, always remain optimistic, never give up and do not settle. Remember: only by embracing your losses will a win become inevitable. How to: Deal with interview rejectionFive things you should never do if you don’t get the jobStill searching for your perfect position?  View all of our current vacancies now

Coping With Career Regret - Hallie Crawford

Adapting To Career Regret More than ten years back, I was sitting in a prospective employee meeting for an occupation I realized I wouldn't care for. I distinctively recall figuring, This activity is certifiably not a fit for me. First, my imminent supervisor was an excessive amount of like my dad (love my father, yet we would butt makes a beeline for cooperate!) and this sounds senseless, however I would need to wear pantyhose for this activity. Also, I despise pantyhose. I realized the activity was definitely not a fit for me, yet when they offered me the position what did I say? Truly. I talked myself into it and figured I could make it work since I needed to take care of my doctoral level college credits. After two years, I was becoming ill regularly and crying in the washroom, prepared to stop. Sound natural? We've all accomplished some type of vocation lament, regardless of whether it's in a profession change or only an expert choice we wish we hadn't made. How would we keep away from, as most ideal as, settling on those poor profession decisions the second time around? Here are three essential strides to kick you off: Adjust. Match your expert objectives with what is most satisfying to you first. In the event that you do this, you will be dealing with your needs first and what makes a difference most to you in your profession. This will assist you with distinguishing the correct profession objectives and decisions en route. Put together or characterize satisfaction with respect to your vocation esteems (those things that are generally fulfilling or satisfying to you at work, the heart bit of the condition, maybe) and your needs (the things on your rundown that permit you to deal with yourself monetarily and something else. The down to earth components, or the head bit of the condition). You should adjust both to be effective. Gauge every one similarly. Grow: Once you've recognized what's satisfying to you, figure out how to offset the energy with the commonsense when distinguishing profession objectives and suitable activities. Start with the enthusiasm first, and dream and prepare to stun the world. On the off chance that you start little, you'll get little, so pull out all the stops here while distinguishing your objectives. Common sense can restrict direct front far reaching thinking, so when you're characterizing your objectives, conceptualize with a companion so you're truly considering some fresh possibilities. At that point acquire the commonsense. From a commonsense outlook, dealing with your bills, your wellbeing, and so forth., how might you execute those objectives in a shrewd manner? Hazard: So how would you know when your objectives are energetic, yet in addition useful? When do you take a professional hazard and when do you hold on? Any change or development towards an objective requires some component of hazard. You need to become acclimated to facing those challenges, intellectually get ready for them (build up your hazard or strength muscle), and figure out how to assess chance. With every objective you're assessing, and ensuing activity steps, ask yourself: Will this move me towards my objective? In what manner or capacity? What move steps would i be able to make to accomplish that objective? Record them all. At that point assess which activity steps push you ahead yet empower you to limit your hazard and deal with the viable side. At times you have to jump into the profound finish of the pool; once in a while you don't. Assess each hazard and be key about your activity steps. In the wake of crying in the washroom and attempting numerous approaches to improve my activity, which didn't help, I gave my notification. I didn't have anything arranged and they thought I was insane. In any case, I realized I needed to be a mentor and expected to face the challenge of leaving that activity. I realized that doing so would move me towards my objective. What's more, I realized I could accomplish temp work en route and figure out how to cover my tabs. I was youthful and progressively adaptable back then. After two years, my training practice was taking off and I was in my fantasy profession. The most serious hazard in life isn't taking one. Risk is important to keep away from vocation lament. The key is to limit and oversee it.

Four ways to help recruiters find your CV by Michael Cheary Crafting the perfect CV is a vital part of any jobseekers journeyBut even if you’ve listened to all of the available CV advice, templates and tips, there may be even more ways to improve your chances of success especially when it comes to how visible it is to recruiters. Even registering your CV can have a multitude of benefits, and if written correctly, could lead to you being shortlisted for your perfect position. Here are our top tips to help you optimise your CV for search, and help recruiters find you:1. Make the most of your synonymsIn order for your CV to be successfully found by a recruiter, you need to think like a recruiter. Most hiring managers use a CV search tool to look for a specific keyword, either on its own or in combination with other words (e.g. Sales, Retail Assistant, Retail AND Manager etc.). For this reason, including all kinds of terminology is vital. For example, if you’re a Retail Assistant, and the recruiter is searching for a S ales Advisor, your CV may not rank very well in the listings (if at all), despite the fact that you have all the appropriate skills. So ask yourself, could your previous titles be referred to by any other name? If the answer is yes, try and mention these variations at some point in your CV.Alternatively, if you’re going for an entirely different position, include the title you aspire to. That way, you’re covering all bases. What words should I use on my CV?How to: Use job descriptions to land your dream role  2. Be industry specificIn addition to searching for job title, many hiring managers will also look for specific skills. To help maximise your potential, use any industry terminology or jargon to your advantage. For example, if you’ve used any particular software during previous roles, or learnt anything whilst studying which may improve your chances, always make sure you mention them, even if they don’t seem particularly applicable to you at the time. This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at the potential omissions and oversights you could be making.Even something as simple as stating your proficiency in using systems such as Salesforce, or mentioning your previous experience mitigating changes that arose after Google’s Penguin and Panda updates, could help set you apart. What not to do on your CV3. Include and expandDon’t just include every piece of industry specific jargon that applies to you. Expand on it.For example, saying you’re proficient in Microsoft Office, although potentially true, could be underselling your exact abilities. Instead, stating that you are adept at using Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel (et al) not only underlines your knowledge, it also makes you much more likely to appear in CV searches. To further increase your chances for success, try stating your current level in a few key areas. Saying you’re an expert in Microsoft Excel/Microsoft Excel expert can be much more effective than simply e xpressing your competency. Is your CV sabotaging your career?4. Check spellingFinally, the age old problem: spelling.Although this point should undoubtedly be made for every CV, it holds particular importance in this scenario. Think about it. Although it looks unprofessional to miss your typos when applying for a vacancy, some recruiters may give you the benefit of the doubt if they like the rest of what they see.But when it comes to CV search, having the correct spelling is absolutely vital, as searches will not pick up those terms that are spelled incorrectly.Remember: Re-read everything again and again before submitting.Spell check is not infallible.ATS: What you need to knowFour tips for optimising your CV for ATSNeed more CV advice? It takes an employer just seven seconds to save or reject a job applicant’s CV. No Sickie Zone Why Contractors Dont Take Sick Days

No Sickie Zone Why Contractors Dont Take Sick Days Why dont freelancers and contractors take sick days? Is it because they lose out on their day rate? Is it because they are simply super-human workers? The latest data from Contracting Scout’s Contractor Confidence survey shows that contractors are a committed part of the UK’s workforce, with the majority not having had a sick day in the past two years. Some 53 per cent of respondents haven’t called in sick in the last two years, with 31 per cent of these having never called in sick. Research  findings Over a third of contractors would have to be at death’s door before they called in sick to work Sixty per cent been out of work for more than a month at a time they wanted to be working Three-quarters (75 per cent) would recommend the contracting life to others While 13 per cent of contractors stop working when ill, 52 per cent continue working if they’re mildly unwell and 35 per cent soldier on unless they’re at death’s door. Most contractors seem happy with their working life, with three-quarters (75 per cent), saying that they’d recommend becoming a contractor to others. The majority (60 per cent) also plan to continue contracting for at least the next two years, if not indefinitely, with 17 per cent wanting to stop in the next two years, and 22 per cent undecided. Of the 25 per cent who said they wouldn’t recommend contracting, the majority (62 per cent) cited worry about where the next contract would come from as the reason. The study suggests this is a potential risk for the majority for contractors, with 60 per cent saying they had been out of work for more than a month at a time when they wanted to be working. However, most contractors have prepared themselves well for gaps in employment. Some 52 per cent have three or more months’ worth of earnings set aside, while 72 per cent plan to increase the amount they have saved. The experts weigh in Aki Kakko, CEO of Candarine: Contractors overall often behave very similarly to entrepreneurs. They feel that it is their responsibility to get the work done and achieve the results regardless of their current condition while full-time employees often feel that it is their right to have sick leave and others in the team will pull the weight during that time. The perception of sick leave is often completely different compared to permanent employees. As a downside, this can lead to unwanted long-term consequences such as burnout and other health issues. Dominic McNamara, CEO of Cruit: Contractors are certainly not super-humans but unlike the gainfully employed they appreciate where each days pay comes from. While those employed often feel hard done by and bemoan their situation, contractors (due to their higher earning potential) have a value attached to each portion of the day, week, month and year. So, sickness and time-off in general is considered in a different light: Contractors know that taking a holiday isnt just a flight/hotel/spending-money cost but a non-earning period too whereas permanent employees feel theyve earned their time off and will avoid working during those two weeks in the sun however possible! Having managed teams across Europe I was always amused at some employee-friendly nations where permanent staff felt compelled to take their contracted sick-leave as if it were additional holiday days! This concept is totally alien for the contracting workforce! This debate defines well the Opportunity : Cost scenario it it worth a day in bed to lose £500? It would be telling to analyse the differences in opinion on this debate where earning potential is similar for Contractors and Employees. For sure, high rate contractors value their time off, but dont take duvet days for fun! Andy Bellass, co-founder of hibob: I think one of the things to consider here is the true definition of what a ‘sick’ day actually is, which we know can actually have many meanings. ‘Interview’ day, ‘Hangover day, I’ve simply had enough’ day. But for a contractor it’s much clearer. The first definition is quite clearly ‘Unpaid’ day and you can imagine that money has a brilliant placebo effect on constitution. I’d love to see statistics that correlate ‘Fever to Picking up the phone ratings. e.g. The Average Full Time Employee is more likely to pick up the phone 2.3 Degrees lower than a contractor. Then we’ve got ourselves some stats. There must be an app for that. I think the second thing to consider is from the Full Time employee side. There is an argument to say that FT employees work harder, work longer hours and be more emotionally committed to a business that they are part of. As such ‘sick’ days can often simply blur into ‘duvet / recovery’ days and when you think that contractors are less likely to work 100% of their available time this makes complete sense. Again another interesting stat would be to compare that actually yearly hours worked for a Full Time Employee vs a Contractor. They may have less sick days but do they actually work more!! Will Ryles, Head of Recruitment at Contracting Scout: Contractors are a very reliable part of the workforce, with the majority carrying on with projects unless they’re very sick. There is of course a financial incentive for them to do so as they do not receive sick pay, but this also shows that if you want something done on time, contractors can be an excellent option. Liz Sebag-Montefiore, Co-Founder Career Coach at 10Eighty I believe contractors rarely  take sick days based on two reasons firstly due to the obvious reason that  they only get paid when they work;  but more importantly, they enjoy the work theyre doing  and  have chosen to take the work on. People  are far more likely to take sick days when theyre not engaged at work, and as freelancers and  contractors can be picky as to what work they take on,  are bound to want to complete projects even if theyre not well so they get paid and for the satisfaction of seeing what theyve achieved that day. After all, they can rest and recuperate over the weekend!

Non- Permanent Ways You Can Completely Transform Your Appearance

Non- Permanent Ways You Can Completely Transform Your Appearance Now and again it’s fun to switch things up a bit. Maybe you’re going to a special party and want to do something different, and really wow everyone. Or perhaps you just feel like experimenting? If you work in a professional environment, you might not get much creative expression with your look or style during the week. So being able to change it up in a non-permanent way is the way to go.   With that said, its also important to remove all the make-up after a long day. Thats where having effective make-up removers can be a big help. With a few changes to your routine, you will be able to regain a refreshing look again.    Here’s how you can go about it! Makeup Makeup can dramatically change your appearance.  Done well it really is an art. Start by evening out your skin tone and covering blemishes and dark circles with a good foundation, concealer and powder. This will instantly make your skin look flawless.  If you usually have a lot of redness, freckles or blemishes just this step alone will change the way you look. Use highlighting and contouring techniques to alter the appearance of your bone structure. This is where darker and lighter creams or powders are applied to areas on the face. It can make your face look slimmer, your cheekbones look more defined.  You can even change the appearance of the size and shape of your nose. For example, running a contour product that’s a few shades darker than your natural skin tone along each side of your nose with a lighter highlight shade run down the center will make your nose look slimmer. Facial Makeup Details Matter Cleverly placed eyeshadow will make your eyes look bigger and more defined too. Experiment with different smokey eye looks and liners. These can really accentuate how they look and make them a stunning standout feature. False eyelashes are extremely effective and can help you achieve a very pretty doll-like finish. They open up your eyes making you look more awake, and do a much better job than any mascara ever could. You can get a huge range of styles from natural and subtle all the way through to ultra bold and glamorous. Finally, big lips have been a huge trend for the last couple of years. But you don’t have to resort to lip injections to get on board. Slightly overlining your lips with a lip liner before filling them in with the same shade will give you the appearance of a plumper pout. Choose a matte product as this will have the most lasting power. When you’re using this technique you don’t want it smudging across your face! A smudge-proof liquid lipstick is your best bet. Contact Lenses Incredibly, a procedure now exists where you can permanently change the colour of your eyes. A coloured implant is inserted into the iris, giving them a different colour and works almost like a permanent coloured contact lens. However, this is still a very new procedure and not without its risks! If you don’t want to go to such extremes, regular removable colored contact lenses are a much better choice. You can experiment with all different kinds of shades. From natural looking colors such as brown, blue and green to more extreme vibrant colors for fun. You could also try Korean circle lenses which make your iris appear larger. It’s a quick way to instantly change how your whole face looks and is an excellent way to try something new. Have a go on an eye color changing app or program online, and you can play around with different shades before deciding. The difference really is shocking, with a dramatic color change (light to dark, or dark to light) most people look like a different person entirely. Fake Tan If you’re naturally quite pale, fake tan is a quick way to totally transform your look.  But without dangerous UV rays from the sun or sunbeds. A tan can make you look healthy and sun kissed.  Who wouldn’t want to look like they just stepped off a beach?! When your skin is darker, it can change how your eye and hair color looks, and overall just make you look different. Getting fake tan right can be tricky so you may have to experiment with various brands and shades. There’s a fine line between bronzed and satsuma, so it’s worth treading carefully. Always exfoliate before applying for the best finish, and use a tanning mitt to put it on. Fake tan hands is a cardinal beauty sin! Deepen the look further using bronzer on your face and body. And if you’re going out for the evening, a small amount of shimmer on the legs and decolletage looks fantastic over fake tan. If you’re using to looking a certain way, this is bound to create a massive impact when you turn up at the party! Hair Extensions Even if you’re too scared to dye or cut your hair, you can change how it looks with the use of hair extensions.    Clip in extensions aren’t too expensive to buy and allow you to instantly change your appearance. The length and added volume of the hair will make you look and feel glamorous.    But always go for 100% human hair rather than synthetic, or a synthetic blend. They also allow you to try out styles that you might not have been able to achieve with your natural hair. Long ponytails, messy buns, braids and a whole host of other styles can be accomplished with clip in extensions. There are of course longer lasting extension methods such as sew-ins and extensions that are bonded to the hair with glue. These will last for a few months. However, the clips ins are great as you can take them in and out within minutes. You could keep your hair tidy and modest for work but go all out on the weekends with long volumized locks. Beyond Extensions To change thing up even further, you can even buy clip in bangs too if you’ve always been too scared to cut your own. This can massively change how a person looks, and best of all it’s completely reversible. And if you wanted to temporarily modify the color, why not go for a full wig instead? You can buy wigs made out of 100% human hair which look very natural and realistic. So if you’re a blonde that has always wanted to experiment with a dark shade, or are naturally dark and want to try platinum this is a fantastic way to go! Alternatively, you could go with a fun colour that you’d never be allowed to wear at your workplace. Pastels are popular, or you could even have a hairdresser do you a custom shade. Again just make sure you’re not buying synthetic hair, as with extensions it gets very tangly and can’t be dyed or heat styled. Plus synthetic hair has a naturally plastic looking quality which looks very obviously like fake hair. Glasses If you usually wear glasses, switching to contacts instead can be enough to make you look completely different. If you don’t wear glasses, try experimenting with pairs which have clear/ non-prescription lenses. ‘Geek Chic’ has been a comeback trend this year inspired by Gucci.  You can easily experiment with the look using fashion glasses. Thick bold frames can look amazing! Clothes Finally, change your appearance with clothes. If you usually wear a certain style, changing this up will alter the way you look. Push yourself out of your comfort zone.  Go into a store and pick up a few pieces to try on that you wouldn’t usually have considered. If you don’t want to spend much, look through sales or thrift stores and pick up items from there instead. Use blogs, Pinterest and Instagram as a source of fashion inspiration and replicate any styles you’re drawn to. If people are used to seeing you wearing very ‘safe’ pieces, or you’ve had the same style for years, this is bound to make their jaw drop! If you’re conscious of your figure in tighter pieces, wearing shapewear underneath will pull you in and make you look smooth and slender. Think about outfits as well as footwear, jackets and any accessories to finish everything off. Think New You You can transform from Plain Jane to fashion diva, biker chick, girly girl or bohemian in minutes just by what you wear. Tailor your hair and makeup to the style for the full effect. Clothing is a fun way to switch up your style, and if you don’t like it, then you can just change back. So give it a go! So play around with different looks and just enjoy it! See yourself as a blank canvas and allow yourself the creative expression to try new things. The beauty of all of this stuff is that its completely reversible, so what have you got to lose? If you’re fed up of looking the same way and crave a new look, you can totally transform on just  weekends.  And then still be back to your professional and modest self on Monday morning. Have you ever found yourself in a style rut, or craved a new look? Then go ahead, be daring, and try some of these! Image credits. Main.   Makeup.   Contacts.     Hair.  Glasses.  Clothes.

From Top Biller to Billing Manager... Ready or Not

From Top Biller to Billing Manager... Ready or Not Deciding whether or not to take the leap of faith to becoming a billing manager in recruitment is a dilemma faced by many  successful recruiters. Equally, it can be  a big challenge from the employers perspective too, in terms of how to ensure that employee experiences a smooth transition. In this blog, I will assess what qualities I think a strong billing manager needs to have for it to be the right move, to help you  make your own decision. As well as sharing some top tips for billing managers, I also take a look at what alternatives exist for those who have  proven themselves  as a successful biller but  DON’T want to manage people! Writing from experience In terms of my own testimony, I became a billing manager in 2001. I took the reigns with little preparation; I was sent on a course which gave me the bare essentials but effectively my role was to still bill ( £15k a month as oppose to £30-40k a month as a consultant) and to feed the figures up to my Director.  I had little autonomy in how I developed my team so I moved on after 10 months into my first proper “billing manager” role. By definition, this role meant I had full P+L responsibility for the branch: I trained, managed and developed the consultants to achieve their own personal targets and career goals (training one up into a management role so that I was then managing managers too); developing opportunities for the branch. All still whilst maintaining my own personal billings too; its a big task.  *And as an aside, as mum to two daughters, I have always joked (albeit I am serious) that “managing” two kids and a home is more than enough for me!* What things  do successful billing managers do or possess? 1. Leadership In order to gain the respect and kudos of those you will be managing and supporting, you will need to be a natural leader. Those who have managed externally, so for example, sports teams, tend to display this natural ability well. Do as I do, not as I just say. A strong billing manager will LEAD BY EXAMPLE. If your team doesn’t see you doing it,  how can you expect them to do it? 2. Follows process A good billing manager knows there is a method in what has made them successful. Whether it is set KPIS, a certain style. You need to use your CRM system, have consistency in your approach. Be able to characterise how you have been successful and then encourage and develop your team to follow a process to allow them to achieve success too. 3. Approachable and adaptable Being a manager means you may have to deal with situations as they arise, often without forward planning. Showing  you have the time and interest to get to know your team is something you should  always be wary of. 4. Altruistic In the truest sense, this attribute sort of goes against the premise of recruitment because of course, every action we take in recruitment is about achieving the overall goal of “profit for the business”. However, some of the best leaders I have partnered (as R2R) on behalf of are very generous in how they operate within the team. Working as a “rainmaker” for their team, creating business opportunities for everyone to generate revenue and success. A rare quality in a recruiter? Maybe, but in a good manager, essential. You have to THINK BIG as a manager, for the good of the team as a whole. A collegiate approach to creating a successful team is the ONLY way to be a good billing manager. 5. Commerciality You can be all of the above with bells on but  if your division/team is not making money (profit) it is all totally irrelevant in the long term. Therefore, a successful billing manager must be able to demonstrate commerciality. As a manager youll need to be  capable of creating revenue streams by working strategically with their team to enhance their client proportion. Find new ways, innovate, listen, embrace and expose the team to the best commercial opportunities. If you possess all of the above skills but ultimately you arent certain that managing people is a route you actually want to take, what other career paths are there? Practise lead The notion of a non billing manager is not a new one. By channelling all the ambitions of a successful recruiter yet not allowing them to progress up through a business is risky so most recruitment firms offer a hybrid route now; remuneration milestones are on parity with managers: they may champion certain clients. focus on business development. Or, simply act as the ultimate example of how to operate as a specialist recruiter. As long as the rewards are on behaviours as well as revenue, this route has become very common and creates exceptional recruiters. Business Development Specialist Very often, someone who has been enormously successful as a 360 recruiter has done so through exceptional business development. Another alternative route is to become 100% focused on winning new business for the company. A wise route for any company as it allows you to continually grow potentially in to new markets, thus ensuring you don’t rely on too few clients. Client Services Manager Similar to the BD role, except this role actually leverages existing relationships more than just winning new clients. Where else can we generate relationships and revenue within our current clients. A very strategic role and I think certainly an area that more recruitment businesses should focus on if they want longevity in their markets. Training/ Support/ Operations By taking a recruiter off the tools, you can utilise their skills by then training and developing new staff (and more junior existing) in how to operate within that particular niche and/or company. The top biller sat with newbies showing them how to replicate is surely a satisfying and obvious way to acknowledge the achievements of said consultants and hopefully create a culture of equally successful consultants coming through the ranks. My advice to anyone seeking to move into a billing manager role: Speak to your existing boss/MD. Talk about how you can avoid reducing your own personal earnings. What support can they offer you to ensure this doesnt happen (unless you are not money motivated at all, there is a very realistic threat that you will take a hit). What is your ultimate career goal? If you want to move into senior management, then your criteria is going to change. What training do you need to ensure you have the business skills to be successful as a people manager? Who has been a  successful billing manager in the business before? Speak to these people  about what issues they faced and how to overcome them. I have always maintained that the “jump” from recruitment consultant to billing manager is the hardest one in your career, but if you can achieve it with the support of your employer, it has to be one of the most rewarding jobs in the world!
